Quidditch.. our favorite sport. The game is pretty simple, right? Stay on your broom, get the Quaffle past the Seeker, avoid the Bludgers, and catch the Snitch.. if you are the Seeker. Who doesn't know that? Muggles.

Now obviously Quidditch is the best sport ever, which is why Muggles just had to create their own version. US Quidditch is almost as cool as real Quidditch, but with a few differences.

1. Flying.. duh. (I don't think I need to explain this one.)

2. The Seeker Floor

The first 18 minutes of the game is called the Seeker Floor. This affects the release of the Snitch and the amount of players on the field. See below.

3. The Snitch

In real Quidditch, the Snitch is a tiny golden ball, about the size of a walnut, with wings. The Snitch is enchanted to avoid capture, but remain within the boundaries of the playing field. The Seeker that catches the Snitch receives 150 points for their team and ends the game. In US Quidditch, the Snitch is actually a runner dressed in yellow with a Velcro tail attached to their shorts. This person is not released until the 18th minute of play. To capture the Snitch, the Seekers must pull the tail to end the game. The Seeker to capture the Snitch is awarded 30 points for their team.

4. The Bludger

Bludgers have been known to be pretty nasty objects causing broken bones, concussions, and knocking players unconscious. For US Quidditch, think dodgeball (the game, not the movie.) When a player gets hit, they must drop any ball they are holding and make contact with one of their goal posts before returning to play. This is much tamer than J.K.'s version of the game, which makes sense since we do not have Skele-Gro readily available.

5. The Gender Maximum Rule

During the Seeker Floor (see above) there can be no more than 4 players of the same gender on the field for the same team. After the Seeker Floor, there may only be 5 players of the same gender on the field. This is to ensure that US Quidditch is an inclusive sport for all genders. For more information about the Gender Maximum Rule, please see Title 9 ¾.

Join us at Wizarding Weekend along with the WVU Quidditch team to learn more about US Quidditch, and to get in on the action!

Hogwarts, Hogwarts, Hoggy Warty Hogwarts, Teach Us Something Pleaseeeee... I don't know about you, but my childhood was filled with books. JK Rowling books, specifically. Hogwarts was my escape, a world that was created by someone else, but still somehow it was my own hideout. So when I found out about Wizarding Weekend at The Resort at Glade Springs, I knew I had to be there. Now obviously, the ENTIRE experience was, for lack of a better word, completely magical. I could tell you every single thing I loved about it, but we would need a Time Turner to make up for lost time because I could go on about it for weeks. So here is my top four!

Quidditch

“And it’s Johnson, Johnson with the Quaffle, what a player that girl is, I’ve been saying it for years but she still won’t go out with me —' 'JORDAN!' yelled Professor McGonagall. 'Just a fun fact, Professor, adds a bit of interest —” ― J.K. Rowling, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix

This was easily one of the best parts about being at Wizarding Weekend. Thanks to the WVU Quidditch team, everyone was able to learn how to block a Bludger like Fred and George, throw the Quaffle like Angelina, and catch the Snitch *almost* as well as Harry himself. Quidditch Practice made me feel even more at home in my own little Hogwarts after spending the day at Wizarding School before the feast. The only thing missing from US Quidditch is the actual ability to fly on your broomstick!

⚡ Order Family

“I’m half and half. Dad’s a muggle, Mam’s a witch. Bit of a nasty shock for him when he found out.”

J.K. Rowling, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone

My dad’s a Sapphire, mom’s a Gold, so I feel ya Seamus. Normally, I always sit with my family when we go to dinner, but choosing your order for Wizarding Weekend is serious business. I mean, the Wizard Cup is a huge deal, and I was not about to choose between Sapphire and Gold. So, like any reasonable first year would do, I chose Ruby. Now, the only issues with this were 1. I knew I wouldn’t be sitting with them at The Feast and 2. Someone would be going home with bragging rights for their Order winning the Wizard Cup (congrats, Mom..) It turned out that it didn’t matter that I didn’t sit with my family at The Feast, because I had a new family, my Order Family. I got to sit with Witches and Wizards like me (and this year, we’re coming for you Gold Order.)

⚡ Wild and WANDerful Wizard School

Since we stayed on the package, our Saturday afternoon was filled with all things magic. We found magical creatures in the forest, learned how to brew potions, and tried our hand at wand crafting. Not only did that make our experience even cooler, we also were earning points for our Order with everything we did. We even got to shop in the Books-A-Million souvenir shop AND get a Wizardcature made!

The Feast

Butterscotch Beer- Magical!

I have never found Ronald Bilius Weasley more relatable in my life as I did at The Feast.

Kreacher's French Onion Soup, Molly's Meat Pie's, and desserts galore... oh, and I can't forget the Elixir Bar. The Grand Hall was absolutely breath taking and there were even floating candles! I even had the chance to channel my inner Hermione during the O.W.L. examination which truly tested my HP knowledge.

We truly have a magical place to host an enchanted weekend here in southern West Virginia. If you’re coming to our area for the first time, a side trip to Grandview Park, just a 15 minute drive from The Resort at Glade Springs, is a must.  Once one of the state’s most beloved state parks, Grandview is now a National Park, part of the New River Gorge National River System.  The New River Gorge is America’s “Grand Canyon of the East”, and as you start to make your way to one of the park’s overlooks or hiking trails, the sound of the New River rushing 900 feet below you and a quarter mile away, echoing throughout the walls of the canyon, will take your breath away as you approach. The main overlook offers a commanding view of the surrounding region, with portions of five West Virginia counties visible from one spot.

Pictures just don’t do the New River Gorge justice, and seeing and experiencing this wonder of nature at least once ought to be on everyone’s bucket list.  Travel a little further up-river to the north, and you can experience some of America’s best whitewater rafting on the New, with rapids ranging from mild, relaxing Class I to the wild, take-no-prisoners Class V.  The Gorge is our playground in southern West Virginia, with opportunities for mountain biking, rappelling and rock climbing, ziplining and more—our Activities Concierge can help with reservations to any available New River Gorge excursion.

If you’d rather keep your activities closer to the Resort, a relaxing woodland horseback trail ride at our Equestrian Center is a relaxing way to reconnect with nature.  The Equestrian Center also offers carriage rides, riding lessons and hand-led rides for kids.

For a truly magical experience, let the resort's Spa Orange pamper you with body treatments including massages, facials, body wraps, manicures and pedicures, and more—and always with a complimentary glass of wine or mimosa, or the Spa’s signature citrus water.  Spa Orange sits inside our unique Leisure Center, which also offers Resort guests a full fitness center, indoor pool, ten-lane bowling alley, disc golf, Escape Rooms, and so many more fun things to pack into your Wizarding Weekend stay.
